Books 3-10

Not all of these are finished, and I don't remember what order I read some of them in, but trying to get more organized.

I think the book I mentioned in my last update was She’s older. She’s mocking, combative, and a grizzly. She also outranks him. So why does sophisticated metrosexual Calvin find earthy Amanda so smoking hot? She was married to a certified hero. How can a bear who waxes be Amanda’s second chance at love?

This forthright, widowed she-bear strips off possessive, protective Calvin’s sophisticated veneer and unleashes his primitive inner bear. She makes him forget his city women. Where will their forbidden passions take this mismatched pair? This one is...weird. The characters' motivations and thoughts just don't make sense. I've read half of it, I'm not sure I'll finish this one.

I also read

When times get tough, how bad does a good girl have to get?

Sienna Blakely is bright, articulate, and woefully underemployed. In order to get by, she's forced to rely on the one asset she vowed never to use – her looks. With bills piling up, Sienna signs a contract with Luxxor Escort Services. A contract that strictly forbids any sexual contact with clients…

And then she's assigned to escort Jason Sloan.

Just meeting the hockey player turned business tycoon causes a full-body jolt. Arrogant, powerful, and sexy, he's trouble. He can see beyond the facade she's erected, right down to the intelligent and sensual woman underneath. He challenges her wits, and he challenges the rules.

When he gets Luxxor to upgrade her to an exclusive and more lenient contract, just how far will Sienna go to pay her rent? And to explore her deepest, most intimate desires? This wasn't terrible, but I remember bits of it were weird, though not unusual for this kind of story. Overall, I enjoyed it.

I also started This case, if not solved, could kill off royal vampire legacy.

When Elizabeth Grant from the Nocturnal Defense Society is assigned to protect Nikolai Dragulia, she balks. Next in line to inherit the crown and rule over vampire society, he's equal parts mysterious and brooding as he is arrogant prince. Being a royal babysitter is not what she signed up for, but as Lizzie delves deeper into possible suspects, she realizes this is so much more.

The last thing Nikolai Dragulia needs is a babysitter, even one as gorgeous as she is infuriating. But his life has been threatened, and as heir to a timeless legacy, Nikolai is forced to do what he must for his family, even if that means enduring Lizzie Grant and her salty attitude.

As familial bonds are tested, motives become clear and secrets are revealed, spelling danger for both Nikolai and Lizzie if they can't learn to work together.I'm about halfway through this as well. The story is interesting, though I'm not sure I understand all the characters yet.

I'm also still slowly making my way through Webley and the World Machine.

I recently finished the Frankenstein series by Dean Koontz as well. I had picked up the first one at a library sale last time they had one (over a year ago!) and I found the rest at the libary (though my location only had books 3 & 4, I had to get books 2 and 5 from two different libraries). I really enjoyed the series, it had all the elements you can expect from a Dean Koontz novel. Weird science, a love story, a cute dog that saves the day...

Book 1 Every city has secrets. But none as terrible as this. His name is Deucalion, a tattooed man of mysterious origin, a sleight-of-reality artist who’s traveled the centuries with a secret worse than death. He arrives as a serial killer stalks the streets, a killer who carefully selects his victims for the humanity that is missing in himself. Detective Carson O’Connor is cool, cynical, and every bit as tough as she looks. Her partner Michael Maddison would back her up all the way to Hell itself–and that just may be where this case ends up. For the no-nonsense O’Connor is suddenly talking about an ages-old conspiracy, a near immortal race of beings, and killers that are more—and less—than human. Soon it will be clear that as crazy as she sounds, the truth is even more ominous. For their quarry isn’t merely a homicidal maniac—but his deranged maker.

Book 2 They are stronger, heal better, and think faster than any humans ever created—and they must be destroyed. But not even Victor Helios—once Frankenstein—can stop the engineered killers he’s set loose on a reign of terror through modern-day New Orleans. Now the only hope rests in a one-time “monster” and his all-too-human partners, Detectives Carson O’Connor and Michael Maddison. Deucalion’s centuries-old history began as Victor’s first and failed attempt to build the perfect human–and it is fated to end in the ultimate confrontation between a damned creature and his mad creator. But first Deucalion must destroy a monstrosity not even Victor’s malignant mind could have imagined—an indestructible entity that steps out of humankind’s collective nightmare with one purpose: to replace us.

Book 3 As a devastating hurricane approaches, as the benighted creations of Victor Helios begin to spin out of control, as New Orleans descends into chaos and the future of humanity hangs in the balance, the only hope rests with Victor’s first, failed attempt to build the perfect human. Deucalion’s centuries-old history began as the original manifestation of a soulless vision–and it is fated to end in the ultimate confrontation between a damned creature and his mad creator. But first they must face a monstrosity not even Victor’s malignant mind could have conceived–an indestructible entity that steps out of humankind’s collective nightmare with powers, and a purpose, beyond imagining.

Book 4 The war against humanity has begun. Only now things will be different. Victor Leben, once Frankenstein, has not only seen the future—he’s ready to populate it. Using stem cells, “organic” silicon circuitry, and nanotechnology, he will engender a race of superhumans—the perfect melding of flesh and machine. With a powerful, enigmatic backer eager to see his dream come to fruition and a secret location where the enemies of progress can’t find him, Victor is certain that this time, nothing and no one can stop him.

It is up to five people to prove him wrong. In their hands rests nothing less than the survival of humanity itself.

They are drawn together in different ways, by omens sinister and wondrous, to the same shattering conclusion: Two years after they saw him die, the man they knew as Victor Helios lives on. Detectives Carson O’Connor and Michael Maddison; Victor’s engineered wife, Erika 5, and her companion Jocko; and the original Victor’s first creation, the tormented Deucalion, have all arrived at a small Montana town where their old alliance will be renewed—and tested—by forces from within and without, and where the dangers they face will eclipse any they have yet encountered. Yet in the midst of their peril, love will blossom, and joy, and they will discover sources of strength and perseverance they could not have imagined.

They will need all these resources, and more. For a monumental battle is about to commence that will require all their ingenuity and courage, as it defines what we are to be . . . and if we are to be at all.

Book 5 The war against humanity is raging. As the small town of Rainbow Falls, Montana, comes under siege, scattered survivors come together to weather the onslaught of the creatures set loose upon the world. As they ready for battle against overwhelming odds, they will learn the full scope of Victor Frankenstein’s nihilistic plan to remake the future—and the terrifying reach of his shadowy, powerful supporters.

Now the good will make their last, best stand. In a climax that will shatter every expectation, their destinies and the fate of humanity hang in the balance.

I also picked up the original Frankenstein at the same sale and I've been struggling my way through it. I'm about halfway through. The story itself is good, but the writing is dense and makes it very slow moving. Also, the part that I thought would be the most exciting (and would be described in extreme detail given the rest of the story so far) was merely a casual mention. I had to go back and re-read the page thinking I had missed something.
