Anamnesis Game

I finished this yesterday, but then noticed in my excitement, I missed part of the prompt. So here is the full prompt completed today. Enjoy! [personal profile] singedsun

Act II: Swords:

"After getting your bearings, you walk around town. You know this town. You know it well, but you cannot remember it."

THE STAR
"In front of you walks a couple. They are holding hands and smiling. How does seeing this couple make you feel? Does it remind you of anyone?"

THE HANGED MAN
"Your eyes are drawn to a statue. What is this statue of? Which emotions does it stir in you?"

THE CHARIOT
"You find yourself wandering through a graveyard. What do you find there?"

I stay still until the pain ebbs. When I lift my head, the light is still dim. I try to take in my surroundings, squinting at the objects around me. I'm on the floor, my back against a wall. Above me is a window, the source of the faint light. I can just make out the lines of a small cot on the wall across from me. Slowly, I stand, head swimming a bit at the motion. I try to look out the window, but it's too high. I step toward the cot, wrinkling my nose at the smell. I turn to my right to find another wall, moving to my left, I see emptiness. As I move closer, dark bars take shape. Reaching out a hand, they're cold and solid, only a hands-width apart. Running my hand along them, I feel one shift, sliding away from me. Startled, I pull my hand away, trying to inspect the bars in the poor light. Tentatively, I push the bars in front of me. They swing slowly out.

Wide eyed, I step out, past the bars, turning to look around me. It's darker here, complete blackness to my left, faint traces of light to the right. I keep a hand to the wall, slowly moving toward the light. The wall is mostly bars, interspersed with short pieces of solid wall, until I reach a corner. Continuing to follow the meager light, I turn to the left. The walls in this hallway are solid, I can see the outline of a door ahead, the light shining through the cracks around it. I quicken my pace, heart leaping in my chest. I have no idea where I am, but I know I do not want to be here.

I open the door, holding my breath as I peer out into the grey light. I see no movement and no sounds come from behind me. I step through the door, closing it quietly behind me. I am outside, the air cool on my skin. I pull in a deep breath, closing my eyes as I try to orient myself. This place feels familiar, but as I open my eyes and see the buildings around me, I still have no idea where I am. Something in me tells me I need to get away from the place I just walked out of. I have no idea where to go, but my feet move and I follow. I keep staring at the buildings around me, hoping something will tell me where I am. I let instinct carry me away and find myself leaving the buildings behind. Soon I pass under an arch, the light still too dim to read the letters scrawled across it. My eyes are growing heavy as the stress of the recent events take their toll. I walk a bit further into what appears to be a park of some kind. I find an open area near some trees and lay down to rest.

I wake again, wincing at the bright light, the pain in my temples a dull ache. I sit up slowly, mentally checking for any other signs of pain. I sigh in relief when I find none. Turning my focus outward, I look around me. The blue of the sky dazzles me and I lose myself in it for a moment until movement catches my attention. Two people are walking together hand-in-hand. They are smiling, but something about it seems off. They are speaking, but I can't hear the words. As they draw closer to me, I watch their faces, their smiles flickering across their lips as they talk. I notice then that their smiles don't fully reach their eyes. There is a silent heaviness between them, a sadness that flows from them. Something skips across my memory, there and then gone. A different set of people in a similar circumstance. I can't see their faces.

When I look back at the couple in front of me, they have turned and are walking away from me. In their place, I notice a statue that had been obscured from view. I stare at the figure, transfixed. Before I'm aware of what I'm doing, I find myself walking toward the stone. Up close I can make out the delicate features of a woman, hair spilling over her shoulders toward her face. Her head is bowed, chin tipped down pointing to her chest. Her eyes are closed, a look of calm serenity in her pose. I stumble back from the statue, a chill prickling my skin. I glance rapidly around me, a feeling of deep horror slowly creeping through me.

For the first time I see them, the gray stones dotted across the grass. I quickly go back to the spot where I woke, a rectangle of fresh earth stretches out before a large rounded stone. The stone appears new, the letters sharp across its surface. I read the words written, is that my name? Something pulls at the back of my memory, I can't quite get it free. What am I doing here? How did I get here? The more I try to dig into my memory, the more the pain increases, but I'm panicked now and I can't stop. I sink to my knees, tears streaming down my face.

oooh I think you were the only one I've done part two prompts for that got the graveyard one, so I was interested to see what you'd do with it. I like it a lot.
