Weathering and books 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12
Apr. 19th, 2018 02:43 pmPicked up Weathering and was disappointed. It wasn't a bad story, it just wasn't what the article that recommended it led me to believe it was. It was a nice little story about family and going home again. No horror to it. It was kind of sad, but then ended more or less happy.
After that I got the other two books I reserved that were recommended from the same article. The first one I read was ( The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley ) Another disappointment. The mother is awful and while terrible things happen, nothing is really fleshed out. It could have been a lot better.
The second one was ( Fen by Daisy Johnson ) This one was great. This is what I was looking for from what the article said all the books were. I wish it had been a full book instead of a collection of short stories. Some of them kind of wandered and I lost what the point was, but most of them were great.
Then I moved on to some books I bought from the library sale. Hoping for something that wasn't disappointing.
First was ( The Lost Boy by Noel Hynd ) This was well done. A nice story with a hint of supernatural. On the surface, it's a small town dealing with a family that feels they rule the place. People disappear or turn up dead and no one does anything until it's members of that family. But dig a little deeper into the current murders and there's more going on. There's a side story about a new reporter that moves to the town in the middle of everything as well. Overall, a good read.
Then I read ( No Darker Place by Debra Webb ) This was good as well. I liked the storyline and the characters. There are other books, but they follow the vigilante, and while it could be interesting, I really didn't find much about him that makes me want to know more. His whole back story is in this book. If I find them, I might check them out, just as another author to add to my "quick read" pile, but it's not something I'll look for.
And now I'm reading ( Sense of Evil by Kay Hooper ) I like it so far. Kay Hooper is one of my "quick read" authors. I like her writing and her books are usually enjoyable. I've only just started it, so I don't have much to go on as far as story goes, but it's good so far.
