Ok, he's a dog, not a puppy, but he's small, so kind of a puppy. He's almost 5, but still playful and affectionate. He's a long haired dachshund, brown and white piebald, so kind of like a tiny springer spaniel.

Andy has wanted a dog FOREVER, but with my older cats, it wasn't an option. We tried a puppy (legit puppy, like 8 weeks old)a few years ago, but it didn't go well. We decided when we tried again we would get something calmer (she was a lab/beagle mix) and something older/already housebroken.

After Punkin passed in July, we started doing more research into what kind of dog to get and Andy decided he really wanted a long haired dachshund. I wanted another kitty (I love both, but I'm more of a cat person), but we wanted to get them around the same time so they could be friends. We had initially planned on waiting until after the holidays to get any animals, but I was so used to having a cat, that I was having trouble getting through my grief. So we got Artemis in September.

But given the money involved, we decided we would still hold off on getting a dog until the holidays or after. But we both still looked at adoption sites every so often. Most of what we saw were adorable puppies, not what we were looking for.

Then, just before Halloween, Andy found one. He was listed as calm, good with kids and cats and (we thought) 2yrs old. But he was an hour away. We talked about it for a day or two, and decided to go ahead and fill out an application to meet him. It took about a week to hear anything back, but he was still available and we scheduled a meeting for the weekend after Halloween.

As soon as we got out of the car, he ran up to us, tail wagging. He was very happy to see us. When we left, he tried to jump in the truck with us. We all really liked him, but we had also found a couple of dogs at the local shelter that we wanted to look at, so we told them we would let them know in a couple days if we wanted to adopt him.

The dogs at the shelter were TERRIFIED of us. Barking/growling, wouldn't let us near them at all. And did not like cats. So that was a no go.

Andy contacted the adoption agency to make sure the first dog was still available and then went ahead and filled out the paperwork. We found out that he's actually 4 instead of 2. The family that was fostering him had had him for 2 years, we misunderstood the listing. But 4 is still young for a dog. We went and picked him up late on the Tuesday after Halloween. It was dark when we got there, but he still ran out to greet us. He bounced around the car the whole way home.

When we brought him in the house, Artemis sniffed at him and immediately tried to get him to play with her. We've had a few bumps, but we've only had him for a week, so we're still adjusting. Kiley is his favorite person. He's always cuddled up with her on the couch and he's always waiting to go get her from school. So far he's a good puppy and we're pretty happy with him.
