lavendersparkI'm still reading Patchwork Girl, but a friend told me I should read In the era of colorblindness, it is no longer socially permissible to use race, explicitly, as a justification for discrimination, exclusion, and social contempt. Yet, as legal star Michelle Alexander reveals, today it is perfectly legal to discriminate against convicted criminals in nearly all the ways that it was once legal to discriminate against African Americans. Once you’re labeled a felon, the old forms of discrimination―employment discrimination, housing discrimination, denial of the right to vote, denial of educational opportunity, denial of food stamps and other public benefits, and exclusion from jury service―are suddenly legal. after talking about the movie/documentary The 13th.
I told him I wasn't sure if I could watch it, given the subject matter. I just wasn't sure I could handle it emotionally. So he suggested the book that it's based on. I put it on hold at the library (all 20 copies were checked out) and it just came in yesterday, so I went and picked it up today.
I haven't started it yet, but it's just under 300 pages and hopefully doesn't read like a textbook. It's been a while since I've read any non-fiction. I'll be sure to share my thoughts when I'm done/as I go.
