Just started The killer's methods are terrifying. He stalks the basements and underground passageways of New York City. He tattoos his victims' flesh with cryptic messages, using a tattoo gun loaded with poison, resulting in an agonizing, painful death.
When a connection is made to the Bone Collector-the serial killer who terrorized New York more than a decade ago-Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are immediately drawn into the case.
Rhyme, Sachs, and the NYPD must race against time to answer the many questions the investigation uncovers: Whom will the killer attack next? What is the message behind the victims' tattoos? Does the killer's own inking--a fanged centipede sporting a woman's face--hold any significance? And what is his ultimate mission?
As time runs out, Rhyme discovers that the past has returned to haunt him in the most troubling way imaginable... Tuesday.
It's pretty good so far. I've never read any of his books, but I've seen The Bone Collector movie with Denzel Washington. So of course now I read the character (Lincoln Rhyme) in his voice.
My only complaint (aside from the whole using the full character name ALL THE TIME (which seems to be a thing now)) is the loads of unnecessary extra information. I don't care about how the lab machines work, just tell me the results! I don't care about past cases, unless they tie into this one!
Maybe it's just me, I don't know. Probably explains why I've been reading so much YA lately though lol.

on 2017-08-06 04:55 pm (UTC)Deciding what to leave out of a text is the mark of a good author. I totally don't think being concise should only apply to YA books. :D
I know I find it hard to delete words (even if they're completely superfluous), so probably other authors have that problem, too. Just shows I'm not a good one. ;)
I am currently reading a fic where the author has included a lot of geographic information - street names and city names, that kind of thing - and all I can think is "yes, you can use google maps, get on with it already!"

on 2017-08-08 03:01 pm (UTC)I have a hard time editing myself as well, but with professionally published books, I expect a bit more. They have editors to, you know, edit.
