After the darkness of the Horsemen series and Ruin, I decided to go for something lighter.

I dug through my kindle and found Lady's Guide With her name mired in scandal, Cornelia Mortmain's marriage prospects are nil.
Wild adventurer Burnell is exactly the sort of 'dangerous man' she's sworn off, and posing as his fiancée can only spell trouble.
Or, make her so notorious she'll become irresistible.

Can they convince everyone they're madly in love?
The game is on! This was disappointing. I expected adventure, archeology, and romance. I got almost none of those. The main focus of the book was society's view of women. I've got enough of that in real life, thanks.

So in desperation I searched through the books in my unlimited access and stumbled down the rabbit hole with The Harem of Hearts series.

Underland Um. Um. Um.
Are you reading this?
If you are, I need your help.

I was at a party; I was running; I fell.
And get this—this is the part you'll never believe—I fell down a rabbit hole.
Like Alice in those old books.

Except in those books, there wasn't blood everywhere.
In those books, the characters weren't all male, attractive, and interested in me.
Forget everything you know about the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the March Hare …

This isn't Wonderland; this is Underland.
Violence, romance, hallucinogenic tea, and magic … that's all there is in this place.
There's me, Allison, and there are the men that want me, the enemies that hunt me, and the darkness that's quickly rolling in.

And only I can stop it.
So if you're reading this, will you help me?
Please. I just want to escape this place and go … home.

Tea Party Holy fucking hearts.
Did you just read that?!
If you did, I need your advice.

I met fallen angel princes; I met a Savage Duke; I met a Cheshire Cat.
And remember—how could you possibly forget—I'm the fabled Alice from the prophecy.
Just a twisted, dark version of the girl in Lewis Carroll's old books.

Except in those books, there was a happy ending.
In those books, Alice wasn't dating nine very different, very beautiful men.
But now that I've met the King of Hearts and the Mad Hatter, I'm not sure who the real bad guys are.

I'm the only one who can turn Underland back into Wonderland again.
But if I have a chance to escape the blood, the death, and the intrigue in this place, should I take it?
I'm Allison Liddell, and I've got a choice to make: stay here and fight the darkness, defeat the Anti-Alice, and survive the Torrid Tea Party ... or run.

Tweedledee says I can change the world.
So if you're reading this, will you help me decide what I should do?
I want to go home, but I can't leave this place as broken as I found it, now can I?
Looking-Glass I'm so fucking scared right now.
No, not just scared—I'm terrified.
And if you're reading this, you should be, too.

I fell through the Looking-Glass; I got back home.
But get this: I didn't come alone. Oh, and it doesn't feel like home anymore.
Unlike Alice in the original story, this is not my Wonderland.

In the original story, the Walrus and the Carpenter didn't follow Alice back.
In that story, she didn't bring her harem of lovers with her to meet Dad.
Mom, Dad, meet my nine boyfriends; one of them's a faerie who foretells the future—is that what I'm supposed to say?

Back in Underland, things are even worse.
Betrayal, heartbreak, and death … that's all that's waiting for us in Castle Heart.
I'm "the Alice", bringer of prophecy, and I'm starting to fall for all nine men in my life.

So, can I stop the chaos that's rolling in on black wings?
If you're reading this, can you help me, please?
Save the world, get the guys, and give me my happy ending.
I very much enjoyed this series. The story itself is well done and calls back to the original in fun ways. There is another series planned, with the first book coming in August.

Scrolling through the author's work, I found she also has a Wizard of Oz retelling. I couldn't help myself.

Bad Wizards My little dog, Toto, just shifted into a man. A gorgeous, chiseled beast of a man. That was about thirty seconds before the storm hit and he clutched me against his naked body while wild winds raged all around us.

Yeah, we're seriously not in fucking Kansas anymore.
There are male witches with toothy smiles, a man with a tin arm, and some wizards. Some very, very bad wizards--and they're all interested in me. Romantically. How ... interesting.

Oh, and then there's Dorothy, the girl who's claiming that she's the good guy, and I'm the bad one, all because the power to control storms sleeps in my fingertips.

My name is Ozora, Oz for short, and I'm a girl from nowhere, destined for somewhere. I didn't enjoy this as much as I did the first series, but it is an interesting retelling. Unfortunately the rest of the series is not available yet.

Then I found another book by Beverley Lee and since I loved Ruin so much, I decided to give it a shot.

Little Bones David Lansdown, esteemed British horror writer and supernatural sceptic, is used to basking in the glow of the press…
Until a hastily snapped photo hits the headlines and makes his affair with his publisher’s son public.
When David finds himself at Bone Hollow, a house with a glass wall overlooking a wild and desolate moor, his only concern is writing his next best seller to bury his misdeeds in the past.
But something stirs beneath the earth. Something bound to the land. Something determined to take everything from him.
Luca Fox-Waite is still in love with the man who cast him aside, but his own childhood demons lurk in his shadow. As he discovers more about Bone Hollow’s history, he finds himself ensnared in its story—a story steeped in time and tragedy.
Because curses lie in bones, and they do not die. I haven't finished this yet, but I'm more than halfway through. The story is...ok. The writing isn't nearly as good as Ruin. Overall I'm pretty disappointed.
